Privacy Policy

Voice and Wellness Speech Pathology is committed to protecting client privacy and handling personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).

Scope

This policy applies to all services provided by Voice and Wellness Speech Pathology. It governs the collection, storage, use, and disclosure of personal information to ensure client privacy is maintained at all times.

What Information Is Collected

Personal and health information necessary to provide speech pathology services may be collected, including but not limited to:

  • Name, date of birth, and contact details

  • Medical history, current health conditions, and treatment history

  • Information relating to funding (e.g. NDIS, Medicare, WorkCover, or private health insurance)

  • Details of treating medical practitioners or allied health professionals (e.g. GP or specialists)

Information is generally collected directly from clients during intake, assessment, or treatment. With appropriate consent, information may also be collected from other health professionals, family members, or nominated support persons involved in care.

How Information Is Used

Personal information is used to:

  • Provide and manage speech pathology services

  • Communicate regarding appointments, treatment, and care

  • Meet legal, professional, and funding body obligations

Information may be shared with other health professionals involved in a client’s care (with consent), or where required or authorised by law, including for Medicare, NDIS, or WorkCover purposes.

Information Storage and Security

Reasonable steps are taken to protect personal information from misuse, loss, unauthorised access, or disclosure.

  • Information is stored electronically in secure systems. Paper records are securely destroyed once digitised.

  • Access to personal information is limited to authorised persons on a need-to-know basis.

  • Data is backed up regularly, and strong password protections are used.

In the event of a data breach that is likely to result in serious harm, affected individuals will be notified as soon as practicable, and appropriate action will be taken in accordance with legal requirements.

Client Rights

Clients have the right to:

  • Access personal information held about them

  • Request correction of inaccurate or incomplete information

  • Withdraw consent for information sharing, where applicable

Requests can be made by contacting Voice and Wellness Speech Pathology directly.

Consent and Disclosure of Information

Personal information is only disclosed to:

  • Treating professionals involved in care (e.g. GPs, specialists, allied health providers)

  • Family members or nominated support persons (with consent)

  • Relevant authorities in the event of a health emergency or where required by law

Written consent may be requested for certain disclosures and will be discussed with clients prior to information being shared.

Privacy Breaches

If a privacy breach occurs, the following steps will be taken:

  1. The breach will be contained and assessed

  2. Affected individuals and relevant authorities will be notified where required

  3. Corrective action will be implemented to reduce the risk of future breaches

Complaints and Feedback

Concerns regarding the handling of personal information can be raised directly with Voice and Wellness Speech Pathology. All privacy complaints are taken seriously and will be investigated promptly.

Changes to This Policy

This policy is reviewed annually to ensure it remains current and compliant with applicable laws and best practice.
